The first New Moon of the year is on Sunday (18th January) at 7.31 pm (GMT), in disciplined Capricorn. And it’s a big one!! What do you want 2026 to look like? How can you make that happen? This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set out intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals or maintain some aspect of our lives. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Capricorn will be on the 29th of June) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as you move through each lunar cycle.

Not all New Moons are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Capricorn is one of the four cardinal signs, which mark the astrological start of a new season when the Sun moves into them. These are the most goal-focused signs and so I like to use them to plan each quarter. Capricorn has themes around ambition, career and achievement, making it the ideal New Moon to set your goals for the year.

As one of the three Earth element signs, Capricorn is grounded, focused, stable, practical and able to keep moving forward. This is the mountain goat of the zodiac and they are sure-footed, unwavering and always reach their destination. The organised and disciplined Capricorn approach can be applied to help you achieve long-term success.

When setting your Capricorn New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my ambitions and goals for the year ahead?

  2. Where am I being stubborn?

  3. What do I need to prioritise?

  4. Where do I need to set boundaries?

  5. How can I achieve my goals?

  6. Where do I need to assert my authority?

There are also some practical ways that you can work with this New Moon. Make sure that your finances are up to date and review your home security, for instance. As the most ambitious sign of the zodiac, this would also be a good time to start a new course of study or to update your CV and career plan. You might also want to create a structured plan for the next 6 months, start a new project and get outside more. Establishing new routines and structures now will help you to gain that long-term stability and security we all crave.

The first New Moon of the year is kicking things off with a bang!! Every single planet wants to be at this party!!

First of all, we have Mercury, the planet of communication, and Mars, the planet of drive and determination, joining the Sun and Moon in practical Capricorn. This is making it easier for us to stay on task while we think about the consequences of our actions. Thanks to Mercury, we will have clear thinking and clear communication, which can lead to promising new ideas, the initiation of key conversations and maybe even a stroke of genius. Mars is going to help us get things done. This is also a good energy for spicing things up in the bedroom.

Then we have Venus, the planet of love and abundance, and Pluto, the planet of transformation, next door in quirky Aquarius. This will have us thinking about our relationships and where we want independence and freedom. Venus is warning us about hiccups in relationships or money. Make sure you don’t do anything under the New Moon you might regret by the Full Moon. Pluto isn’t messing around this New Moon. Profound transformation is possible, but it might not come in an appealing or easy form. We can go to hidden places and uncover hidden truths. Just watch out you don’t get more than you bargained for.

Not wanting to be left out, we then have Jupiter, the lucky planet of expansion, moving back through nurturing Cancer. Saturn, the restrictive planet of karma, is with Neptune, the planet of dreams, in gentle Pisces. And then Uranus, the crazy planet of chaos and mayhem, is currently moving back through stable Taurus.

Jupiter is making this a lucky New Moon. Things are more likely to come to fruition. Remember that with great risk comes great reward, so dream big. This will be a good time for travel, study or spiritual development. While Jupiter is in Cancer, we should be looking at our emotional foundations and thinking about what really brings us comfort and security.

Thanks to Saturn, this will also be a good time for work situations, a new job or promotion. If you have been looking to bring more structure into your life, now is the time. The Pisces influence here means we can manifest our dreams. If you can dream it, you can do it.

With Uranus, something exciting is about to happen. Break out of your regular routines, shake things up a bit, experiment and see what happens!! As Uranus travels back through Taurus, we are again asked to look at our definitions of stability, security and our values. What outdated ideas need to go?

Neptune is making this New Moon just ooze with spirituality. Forget the busy doing and just imagine being. Listen to your intuition and let it guide you. As Neptune moves towards the end of Pisces, we need to let go of old identities and attachments and prepare for growth.

Overall, this is an amazing New Moon to start the year with. What are those big dreams you have held in your heart? Now is the time to bring them into your reality.
