The last New Moon of the year is on Saturday (20th December) at 1.43 am (GMT), we have the New Moon in adventurous Sagittarius. Take a moment to step back and look at your bigger vision for your life. What dreams or goals no longer align with that? Where do you see yourself in six months? How will you get there? This is a New Moon to dream big and take risks, to grow and learn, to find your place in the world. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set out intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals or maintain some aspect of our lives. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Sagittarius will be on the 31st of May 2026.) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as you move through each lunar cycle.

Not all New Moons are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Sagittarius is one of the four mutable signs, which bridge the gap between the start of the seasons (cardinal signs) and the determined (fixed) signs. These are the most flexible and open-minded signs, and they are known for being able to adapt to change and navigate life. Sagittarius has themes around higher learning, philosophy and travel, making it the ideal New Moon to set intentions around broadening your horizons, learning new things and visiting new places. Sagittarius is ready to go out into the world, learn more about it and find their place in it.

As one of the three Fire element signs, Sagittarius is adventurous, cheerful, hopeful, enthusiastic and optimistic. The fire signs are full of life, creative and passionate. This can sometimes make Sagittarius reckless, restless and impatient. This is the most positive sign of the zodiac. They see everything as an adventure and a chance to learn and grow. This New Moon is a good time to finally take the plunge on something you have been putting off, set the intention to be bolder, and inject some more fun into your life.

When setting your Sagittarius New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my intentions for this lunar cycle?

  2. How can I develop my spiritual practice?

  3. Where do I need to pay more attention to detail?

  4. How can I reignite my enthusiasm?

  5. Where do I need to be more sensitive?

  6. What will give me more physical energy?

There are also some practical ways to work with this New Moon. With Christmas approaching, this is a good time to look at your spending habits and organise a get-together with friends. This can be a wonderful time of year to celebrate with those closest to you, just be mindful of not giving too much, you don’t want to end up in a feeling of lack.

This is a great time to go on an adventure and visit somewhere new. Sagittarius loves to travel, explore and try new things. You might even want to enrol in a new course of study. This would also be a good time to implement some structure in your life, especially if you feel like it is lacking and you don’t know how you will get everything done over Christmas.

This New Moon has both Venus, the planet of love and abundance, and Mars, the planet of drive and determination, whispering secrets to it.

Venus is encouraging us to reach out to others, to find new ways to have a good time, to find pleasure, cooperation and comfort. Relationships may enter a growth phase. While Venus is in Sagittarius, romantic adventures, truth and higher meaning will be in focus.

Mars is warning us about acting first and thinking later. Anything started now may quickly run out of steam or spiral out of control. As Mars is currently in Capricorn, this is a good time to think about what success means to you. We will be motivated by the future and be more aware of the consequences of our actions.

We then have Saturn, the planet of karma and life lessons, and Neptune, the planet of dreams and illusions, being quite confrontational with this New Moon. Both of these planets are currently in Pisces. Saturn is encouraging us to take action on long-held dreams, while Neptune is calling us to take off the rose-tinted glasses.

During the New Moon, Saturn is here to bring us back down to earth. If you are feeling lonely or depressed or pessimistic, then it may be useful to knuckle down to a significant work project.

Meanwhile, Neptune is advising against making unrealistic wishes. We may feel confused or emotionally overwhelmed. If you start something you don't believe in, then it may have fizzled out by the Full Moon.

Overall, the messages from the planets are clear. It’s time to bring some fun and adventure into your life and start making plans for those long-term goals and dreams that you have been holding onto.
