On Thursday (24th July) at 8.10 pm (BST) we have the New Moon in courageous Leo. Following the New Moon in Cancer when we (hopefully) set our goals for the rest of the year, the Leo New Moon comes along to keep us excited about them. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.

New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set out intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals or maintain some aspect of our lives. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Leo will be on the 1st of February 2026.) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as you move through each lunar cycle.

Not all New Moons are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.

Leo is one of the four fixed signs, which follow the cardinal signs and fix in place the things we have started. These are the most stubborn and devoted signs which make them ideal for focusing on the goals set under the cardinal Moons. Leo has themes around determination, courage and leadership, making it a great New Moon to take the lead in your own life and go after what you want.

As one of the three Fire element signs, Leo is self-assured, enthusiastic, big-hearted, warm and loving. The fire signs are the most action-orientated and passionate. This can make Leo demanding and bossy. This is the sign of the zodiac that likes to show off, but they also like to shine a light on other people. This New Moon is a good time to start creative projects and friendships. Let your hair down and have more fun. Express yourself and open your heart.

When setting your Leo New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.

  1. What are my intentions for this lunar cycle?

  2. How can I express my creativity?

  3. Where do I need to take the lead?

  4. Where do I need to be more confident?

  5. How can I be more generous and helpful?

  6. What brings me joy?

There are also some practical ways to work with this New Moon. Leo is associated with friendship, social activities, games and fun making this an ideal time to arrange a social event and add more fun into your life. As a generous energy, where can you be more generous with your time? Could you support a friend or family member? This is also a good time to get organised and to be the leader in your life.

We have four of the big planets bringing good things to this New Moon, even though three of them are currently backtracking.

First we have Saturn, the planet of karma and life lessons, bringing a need for structure. Sometimes we need a bit of structure to be flexible in, and sometimes we need to allow things to flow. As Saturn is currently moving back through Aries, we are being invited to look at the structure and routines in our lives and see if they are actually serving us. Is it time for you to assert some independence? The New Moon in Leo is all about being courageous and taking the lead in your own life. This will also be a good New Moon for work situations, such as a new job or promotion.

Something exciting is happening thanks to Uranus. Shake things up and make some changes. Break your regular old routines and start experimenting. This is very complimentary to the energy Saturn is bringing, if your current systems, routines and structures aren’t working for you, then this is the time to find new ones.

Uranus is the planet of change and rebellion, and is currently making their way through Gemini, the sign of communication. Is it time for you to find new support systems or rethink the way you express yourself?

Then we have dreamy Neptune bringing a spiritual boost to this New Moon. Forget the busy doing and just imagine being. Get more sleep, be more creative, do more meditations and listen to your intuition.

Neptune, the planet of dreams and spirituality, is currently following Saturn through fiery Aries. This is a great energy for thinking about which dreams you have that might need a bit more courage. And the New Moon in Leo is the perfect time for you to set some intentions around how you might make that dream a reality.

Finally we have Pluto making profound transformation possible under this New Moon. You can make some real changes in your life that will have a real and permanent impact.

Pluto is the planet of transformation and hidden truths. This isn’t caterpillar into butterfly energy, it’s the Phoenix rising from the ashes vibe. Pluto is currently moving back through Aquarius, again asking us to review our support network and communities.

Do you have a big dream? This is the New Moon to declare it to the world, find the people who will support you in making it come true, and change the way you do things so that your dream becomes your reality.
