Aquarius Full Moon
On Saturday, the 9th of August at 8.54 am (BST), we have the Sturgeon Full Moon in visionary Aquarius. Where have you been holding yourself back? Let go of insecurities and allow yourself to fully be you. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this Full Moon, how you can work with it, and where it will fall in your chart.
The Full Moon in August is called the Sturgeon Full Moon because of the freshwater fish that were readily caught in the summer by the Native Americans who lived in the region. Other regions called it the Corn Moon, Harvest Moon, Ricing Moon or Black Cherries Moon in honour of the ripening crops ready to be harvested. What have you been working on this year that is ready to be harvested?
Full Moons mark the halfway point in a lunar cycle. This is a time to celebrate your progress and achievements, to practise forgiveness and to release anything still holding you back. If you look back to the New Moon in the same sign, 6 months ago, then you should have accomplished whatever you set out to do then. And if you haven't, then you should have a really good idea of why not.
The New Moon in Aquarius was at the end of January. What intentions did you set then? What has stopped you from working on them? Have you let fear hold you back? How much progress have you made on your goals for the year?
Full Moons are when we start to clear out the stuff we don’t need to create space for the things that we do want.
Not all Full Moons are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A Full Moon is always in the opposite sign as the Sun, giving us a tug-of-war between the energy of the two signs.
Under this Full Moon, we need to find a balance between trying to be all the things to all the people (Moon in Aquarius) and having real relationships (Sun in Leo). Aquarius loves freedom and independence. Are you sacrificing those things for yourself to make sure other people have them? Are they willing to do the same for you?
This is a very quiet Full Moon with only the Sun giving us that tug of war energy. The Moon will be Void Of Course (VOC) immediately following the peak of the Full Moon, which is why there are no planets offering additional guidance.
When the moon is VOC, she isn’t making any aspects (the lines shown in the centre of the chart) from the start of the void period until she enters the next zodiac sign. Or as I like to put it, the moon is done with all the chatter from the other planets and just wants to be by herself.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t some interesting astrology going on. See the blue kite shape in the middle of the circle? With planets in all three air signs coming together, the energy will flow for thought, communication and social interactions.
At the top of the kite (the left point in the chart), we have Saturn and Neptune cuddled up together in Aries. Saturn is the planet of karma, life lessons and is solid, secure and stable. On the other hand, Neptune is the planet of dreams. When these two planets team up, we are looking at structures to help us achieve our dreams, maybe with a dash of spiritual wisdom. As they are in Aries, this could be in the form of new ventures, possibly some risk, and definitely some fun.
Mars is at the opposite side, making the tail of the kite, and pushing people to act on the energies the kite is bringing. Mars is, of course, the planet of drive and determination. Because Mars is opposite Saturn and Neptune, we may experience self-doubt, confusion or insecurities. In Libra, Mars is weighing up all the options, which can cause indecision, which in turn leads to frustration because we just want to do the thing already.
Completing our Kite, we have Uranus, the crazy planet of chaos and mayhem, and Pluto, the planet of transformation. Uranus is in Gemini and ready to turn things around with communication and thought processes. We are questioning why we do things the way we do. Meanwhile, Pluto is in Aquarius, watching for technological advances and changes to society.
My suggestion is to let go of that self-doubt under the Aquarius Full Moon. Think about how you can do things differently and where you want to focus your energy.
Aquarius is one of the four fixed signs, which follow the cardinal signs and anchor in the things that have been started. These are the most stubborn of the signs. They are not easily distracted and do not deviate from the path. They are consistent, loyal, devoted, reliable and patient. Aquarius has themes around experimentation, inventiveness and progression, making it an ideal Full Moon for looking at any outdated beliefs you still have, or where you are still doing things the old way. Aquarius isn’t afraid to try things differently, to think outside of the box, and to be a rebel. If something isn’t working for you, then maybe it is time to try a different way.
As one of the three Air element signs, Aquarius is freedom-loving, intellectual and scientific. They are able to detach themselves from the situation and look for new ways. They are both independent and people-oriented. Air signs bring balance, what do you need to balance?
When looking at what is holding you back that you need to release under the Aquarius Full Moon, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.
Where am I insecure?
What stops me from expressing my emotions?
What bad habits do I have?
Where do I not feel safe to be myself?
What outdated thoughts and beliefs do I need to let go of?
Where am I being insensitive?
This Full Moon is a powerful time to focus on having more fun and creatively expressing yourself. An equilibrium needs to be found between that and emotionally investing in your friends and their needs. What do your friends need from you and how can you bring harmony between that and your own need for self-expression?
As Full Moons are also about endings, any friendships that end now have served their purpose. Let them go rather than fighting for them. This Full Moon is about change and progress. When we close the door on one chapter, we open the door to a new one. Anything that ends or slips away now is creating space for new and better things.
