Cancer New Moon
On Wednesday (25th June) at 11.31 am (BST) we have the New Moon in nurturing Cancer. On the 21st of June, the Sun will move into Cancer, giving us the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year. In the Solar Year, this is equivalent to the Full Moon, a time of celebration and harvesting the rewards of our efforts.
This is a really good time to check in with yourself about how the year is progressing for you. It’s also an ideal time to set your goals and intentions, not just for this lunar cycle, but for the third quarter of the year and even the rest of the year. This week’s blog will look at the energy around this New Moon and how you can work with it.
New Moons mark the start of a new lunar cycle. This is a time to set out intentions for the next 4 weeks, which will help us to achieve our goals or maintain some aspect of our lives. Generally, anything started under a New Moon should be completed by the Full Moon in the same sign. This gives us a 6-month container to work with. (The Full Moon in Cancer will be on the 3rd of January 2026.) When making New Moon Wishes, you can go as big or as small as you like. If you make a big wish, you can break it down into smaller, manageable goals. This allows you to track your progress as you move through each lunar cycle.
Not all New Moons are the same. They are flavoured by the zodiac sign that the Moon is in at the time and influenced by the other planets. A New Moon is always in the same sign as the Sun, giving us a double dose of the sign's energy to work with. This is why people work with this energy to set their goals.
Cancer is one of the four cardinal signs, which mark the start of the new season when the Sun moves into them. These are the most goal-focused and dynamic signs which make them ideal for setting goals and taking action. Cancer has themes around intuition, security and protection, making it the perfect New Moon to not only set your goals for the rest of the year but to also set boundaries to protect your energy and help you achieve them. This is the start of a new season and quarter, and the following two lunar cycles will help you to fix in place your actions and adjust your plan as needed.
As one of the three Water element signs, Cancer is compassionate, caring, nurturing, sensitive and sympathetic. The water signs are the most emotional and feel everything deeply. This can make Cancer insecure and moody. This is the mother of the zodiac and they are protective over those they care for and can give too much. This New Moon is a good time to start new projects and ventures. To tend to issues at home. To connect with your intuition more.
When setting your Cancer New Moon intentions, we can use the themes and energy of this sign to help us. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to get the most from this energy.
What are my goals for the next 6 months?
How can I honour my home space?
What helps me feel safe and secure?
Where do I need more empathy?
Where can I be more compassionate?
How can I go with the flow?
There are also some practical ways to work with this New Moon. You could resolve to create healthier habits, by creating a healthy meal plan or a self-care plan. Reviewing your home security and arranging family gatherings are also great ways to work with the energy.
As an emotional energy, this is a great time to journal around your own feelings. How do you feel and express your emotions? Do you feel safe and secure? Or do you feel overwhelmed, worried or not in control? Do you make time for yourself and your needs, or do you give everything away to other people?
This New Moon is a chatty one!! Not only is she cosying up to the Sun, bringing our emotions and ego in line, but Jupiter, a planet of expansion, is also right there with them, making this a lucky New Moon.
Cancer is the sign of home and family. It has themes around security and is all about our roots. Where do you feel comfortable and at home? Where is your safe space or safe person, for when things start to get a bit too much? With three planets huddled together at one end and another at the other end, this is likely to be an emotional time when we are looking to feel secure in our lives.
Jupiter is a lucky planet, associated with adventure, exploration, learning and putting things into perspective. While in Cancer, Jupiter will bring growth to families and homes. Our desire to nurture will be amplified and we will help others more. We will also be more inclined to take action to make the things we want happen, which may mean being more frugal.
For this New Moon, Jupiter is telling us to dream big and take risks. Things are more likely to come to fruition and it’s a good time for travel, study or spiritual development.
Over in practical and organised Virgo, we have Mars, the planet of drive and determination. This is going to bring out the hard worker in us, and also the perfectionist. We will want to do the right thing at the right time and have a passion for the details. Doing a good job will make us feel good.
The influence of Mars on this New Moon is going to help us get things done and complete projects. It’s also a good time to spice things up in the bedroom.
It’s not all harmonious though. Saturn and Neptune are busy conspiring together over in assertive Aries and making trouble for the New Moon.
Saturn is a planet with a bad reputation because it is all about restriction. It’s also a solid, secure and strategic planet, so that reputation is a little undeserved. This is the planet of Karma and life lessons. With Saturn in Aries, we are looking at our systems, if they are working, if we are able to assert ourselves and express our independence. This is a time when weak areas will be revealed so that we can strengthen them.
You may feel lonely, depressed or pessimistic under this New Moon thanks to Saturn challenging the Moon. Yes, Jupiter is telling us to dream big and go for it, but Saturn is bringing us back down to earth with a bump. Saturn wants us to set some serious long-term goals and knuckle down to any significant work project we have on the go. Luckily we have Mars backing us up to get things done.
Neptune is the planet of dreams but also the planet of deception. While in Aries, this can show up with us idealising independence and freedom, craving fresh starts and feeling brave. But this may also have us struggling to see ourselves clearly, to create boundaries or making ourselves seem important when really we feel insecure. Follow your intuition and have faith in yourself.
We may feel confusion or emotional overwhelm with this New Moon. Be mindful of setting unrealistic wishes. Yes, follow Jupiter’s advice to dream big, but make sure it is something you can believe in warns Neptune. If you do start something you don’t believe in then it may well have fizzled out and been forgotten by the Full Moon.
